The origami style is surely one that really captures me. I’ve had a go at it multiple times throughout my career and creating origami in 3D is not as easy as you’d think. If you try and do it yourself or even if you ask a professional to do it and try to analyse what they did you cannot simply translate it into CGI. Folding a plane in 3D is not easy! Overlapping faces, flipped normals, missing thickness, it can easily turn into a nightmare.
On this project (done for Fake Studios in Barcelona) I was responsible for modelling all origami assets. The best way to do these is breaking it up into various pieces and if a connection can be made then do it, but if it’s forced, better to just leave them as separate even though they look like one piece.
The detailing was done in Zbrush, base topology in Maya.
